It gives zero detail on how these families "arrived" in Canada yet we're supposed to feel bad when they get deported? You need to follow the rules or you will be deported. It's not that difficult to understand. 

I also think the idea of "regularizing undocumented people" is ridiculous. People already view the immigration system in Canada as a complete joke. What's to stop everybody with a plane ticket from coming here and claiming asylum?

Public sentiment is turning against mass immigration. Zero shot the government will proceed with this "regularization". A country with a strong social security net is incompatible with open borders.

It's a tough pill to swallow but Canada cannot save the world. We can't take in everybody fleeing persecution from every country in the world and still expect to maintain social cohesion and a high wage economy.

If you are undocumented and living illegally in Canada,  deportation is a totally reasonable next step.  I don’t think deportation is inherently a bad thing - it really depends on why, which this article does a poor job of highlighting.  

No one is *entitled* to move to - and live in - Canada.  I wish people would stop pushing this narrative.

Undocumented = illegal, in this case deportation is the solution. if not, it is not fair for a whole lot more people who are trying to come to Canada legally or for those who tried and failed and had to stay at their countries.

Everytime I read an article like this it sours me on immigration and refugees. "Refugees" come here from relatively safe countries, get denied them say that it's a failure of our policy and act entitled to live here. Or people come here and just overstay as undocumented immigrants and are shocked when we deport them for not being here legally in the first place. Sorry we didn't let you jump the immigration line for nonsense reasons, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

The article says that the family is being deported for no reason !!!! I find that hard to believe ! 
Immigration cases take years some times decades to be addressed and this notice has probably come after years of applications and appeals, hearings investigations and ….etc etc ….
Now they have exhausted all their options they have been given a deportation notice.
The media is not doing their job they need to provide more context , there is always a reason and that reason or reasons are outlined in their correspondence with the immigration. 

They won’t get deported they probably will be given some sort of amnesty or forgiveness or some other form of relief. 
Canada doesn’t deport fraudulent students or convicted criminals, so they’ll be fine 😃

Is this a joke?  We cannot possibly accept every single person who wants to be here.  We have multiple pathways to PR.  If you can’t get PR and you overstay your visa, you get deported.  That’s how every other country does it, why should Canada be different? This pure entitlement and they need to leave.

I don't want immigrants to "keep their cultural roots" , I specifically want them to integrate into ours. They can make their own food and have friends over for a holiday, but they need to ACT the part as well.

It's said you have to care for yourself before you can properly take care of others. As I see it,  the real problem with this issue is that Canada isn't taking care of itself. Its just burning itself out, so to speak , trying to care of others .  Giving refuge  and resources to large amounts of foreign ppl while ignoring the cries of its own people. Now the crying has grown into displaced anger . 

If our government kicked out everyone not a legal citizen and stopped allowing others to enter for  period to  focused solely on bettering the quality of life for the current legal citizens of Canada especially those most in need, life in Canada would be something to be proud of again . Good to see this. Would help put an end to folks who come as students or workers but realize after they finish their program/work that they don't have the chance to apply through an economic program and decide they might as well try to claim asylum as if it's just another option for PR.

Making a separate comment from my pinned one but, first impressions after reading the bill, definitely not a RIP to asylum claims.

I think this bill addresses some of the biggest areas of issue in existing legislation and even people ineligible under the new ineligibilities retain their right to PRRA. Seems a fairly even-handed and measured approach to address some of the issues that exist

We would be pretty messed over because key industries would lack specialized labour. Our population would also dwindle down because people do not have replacement rate children. Wages and quality of life would probably go down due to economic difficulties caused by extreme shortages in the medium to long term.

So was the company I worked for. So were the shelters I stayed at. Immigration needs to come to a grinding halt like right now . Canadian infrastructure cannot support our current population. Canada needs 5 years to catch up to the current immigration influx. 

I would also argue we need to focus on bringing in non Muslim immigrants at that time to mitigate the culture shock and culture clash most Canadians are feeling.  We want diversity but not a new Muslim country. 

Also the argument about an aging population is bullshit and has been for years now. Baby boomers represent about 1 million people and that has been imported in the last 2 years alone.

For a short time, stopping immigration to Canada might give the country a chance to catch it’s breath due to the housing crisis currently causing major problems. Every province is dealing with this issue right now ! So why not shut the gates for a while and catch up. Then with a new approach to immigration, (so as to not make the same mistakes again) open up the gates and start off at a reduced rate of entry closely monitoring the outcome and adjust as needed to maintain control of the situation instead of running into a housing crisis and driving the cost of housing/ renting up through the roof.

Absolutely. Stop new immigration entirely for 6 years, then re-evaluate. Those who are already here or who have already started the application process should be allowed to complete the process.

I live in Lethbridge, Alberta. Here are some things that I have noticed.

* Jobs are already in short supply and competition is fierce. There are more people seeking jobs than there are positions to fill and many of the people who apply are overqualified.
* People are struggling to even be able to deposit a down-payment on mortgages. Renting is so expensive that you need multiple roommates. Property taxes are increasing every year.
 * Higher educational attainments are not the ticket to employment that they once were, yet our housing market is still subjected to an influx of students who are putting increasing pressure on the local housing market. Many houses are being purchased in order to be rented out, driving up housing prices even further.
 * In my own experience, many of the GLER (General Liberal Educational Requirements) courses were interesting, but ultimately burdensome, because the finite amount of time that I had each day meant that I had to sacrifice my marks in my GLERs for the sake of the marks in my core classes in my degree and diploma. This was to the extent that I even had to take a GLER course over again in college because I failed it the first time. I turned down the pursuit of a masters diploma because I thought that I would not provide worthwhile contributions. It is one of my regrets that I did not do so.
 * Government-backed liberal arts university diplomas and college degrees have course requirements necessitating that students spend money on courses unrelated to their diplomas and degrees. This means that most students will have to move elsewhere to try to make the money that they need to pay off the debt. If the number of students ever plummets, then our local housing market will crash.
 * The tax assessment value of my half-duplex and land has increased by ~14.5% since I purchased it 5 and a half years ago, whereas inflation increased by approximately 19% over the same amount of time. https://www.bankofcanada.ca/rates/related/inflation-calculator/
 * Two and a half years ago, the other half of my duplex came up for sale. I did a walk around to see if it would be viable for me to purchase it for the purpose of renting it out. The realtor figured that the asking price would be about $265k. If I wanted to purchase it in order to rent it out, then just to break even with the mortgage payments alone, she figured that the rent would have to be about $1650 per month at that time. I can't remember if that included property insurance. Then, just to break even with unforeseen maintenance costs (like replacing the old appliances if they broke), I would have to bump it up by another $250 to $1900. Inflation since 2021 to now is 14% according to that calculator above. So 114% of $1900 is roughly $2150 per month just to break even, $285 of which is for maintenance. That is $26k in rent per year just to break even.
* Our healthcare system is strained beyond capacity. Clinics do not accept walk-ins and doctors do not accept new patients.
* Grade school classes are growing larger and larger. The amount of time that a teacher can dedicate to each student is plummeting.
* Government size and national debt both continue increasing.

* Our population has increased from 29 million in 1994 to 41 million in 2024 (that's an increase of 41%), meanwhile government revenue/expenditure/size has increased from $390 billion to $1250 billion (that's an increase of 220%) in that same amount of time. Inflation since 1994 is 86%.

I am not an economist, statistician, or historian, and the following points are unlikely to have been considered. That being said, it is my admittedly-uninformed opinion at this moment in time (though I am always willing to have a discussion) that we do not need even more people who have never paid into the system to come to our country and place an additional burden on things. We are in the throes of a population inversion due to the retirements and deaths of the baby boomers. The COVID virus gave our economy a kick in the ass just as we were starting to show signs of prosperity since the 2008 economic bollocks. We and our government upon which we have become mutually-dependent, are living on borrowed time that was taken from the prosperity and hard work of previous generations. This is an unsustainable pyramid scheme that will collapse, inevitably, along with significant portions of our infrastructure. As if that wasn't bad enough, there is a cancer within our government. A cancer that our government is unwilling or unable to address, except whenever symptoms appear. Misappropriation of funds, deep systemic corruption, ideological favouritism, misapplication of force, perversion of justice, censorship, propagandizing, and surveillance. All under the purview of unaccountable politicians who are rarely held to account for the consequences of the policies and laws that they enact.

Canada is sick. Our economy is sick. Our infrastructure is sick. Our government is sick. Our culture is sick. Right now it's just a runny nose and maybe an occasional nosebleed, but I fail to see how increasing the number of immigrants will do anything but cause unemployment to balloon, cause median wages to decrease, cause median housing prices to increase, and cause further issues for those who were born here.

We transformed our society from one that was more self-sufficient, with localized economies and fewer but higher paying jobs that allowed one parent to work to the bone to take care of the house and raise their children and the other parent to work to the bone to obtain wealth and resources to be used for the family. We've created a society where two parents need to pay a daycare in order to take care of their children during the day while they both work, which further erodes their income. Any sense of community that had once existed because there was almost always someone at the home has eroded. The prospect of raising children is too daunting and burdensome for many people, who say that they are too much work, yet these same people then often have pets that they use as substitutes for children.

We spend so much of our incomes on inexpensive, shoddy, temporary building materials (like wood), or and then we buy crap made outside of our country from fragile, non-reducible, non non-reusable, non-recyclable crap, then fail to value it because it breaks, or it becomes to slow, or it isn't bright enough, or it isn't loud enough. Most people would scoff nowadays at the idea of having the same cell phone for 15 years. Nothing has value or longevity anymore.

Potential ideas:

* Halt immigration so that public resources are not increasingly diluted by non-citizens who've not gathered those resources (children and those who are unable to work excluded).
* Cap government spending increases so that they cannot increase faster than inflation.
* Stop corporations from pillaging us only to get slaps on their wrists when they screw up (there's no way in hell that the Alberta oil sands projects won't be left to Canadians to foot the enormous cleanup bill once the oil stops being lucrative). Your limited liability should not 
* We need to charge extra taxes on property owned by those who do not participate in the economy, who have no intention of living here, or who have no intention of becoming citizens.
* Shutter wasteful government programs. How many times do I need to hear about government employees saying "we'd better use up the budget by buying office supplies, otherwise they'll give us less money next year"?
* We need to scale back government unions and benefits. Too many abuse their seniority to foist their work on the newbies, while those same newbies are the first to be axed when times get hard. If you cannot be more productive than a newbie, if you are unwilling to do your job, if you are unwilling to share your knowledge, or if you are unwilling to be held to account for your own productivity failures, then you shouldn't be in the seat. More responsibility means more reward, but if you abdicate your responsibilities, then you should also abdicate your rewards.
 * I am tired of hearing stories like "Sharon is the office administrator of the food inspector general's office. She rarely comes into work, and when she does, she just sits on her duff while playing games on her phone. Anyone who criticises her is given scattered schedules that are so unreasonable that they make quitting almost inevitable. Whenever things go wrong, someone else always seems to take the fall, even when it was Sharon's decisions that led to it."
  * If you do not generate wealth, then you should not be rewarded as if you do. No special cushy pensions, no special vacation days, no special sick days (unless you work at a sewage treatment plant or in healthcare or something). You are there to serve the taxpayers. When you stop serving the taxpayers, you should stop receiving benefits from them.
  * I work in the IT department of a large company. My job, fundamentally, is to allow the people in the company—who actually generate the revenue—to do their jobs as effectively as possible with the budgetary constraints that our department has been given. I have no benefits that extend beyond the duration of my employment.

I have lived in Ontario all my life.  I am 20 years old currently and I have been struggling to find work for 3 years.  I am part of CAS (Association dedicated to helping youth who had unfit parental figures, etc...Story for another time)  I currently recieve $1500 each month from CAS and $1150 goes towards my rent alone.  I am left with $350 after rent is payed, I have adopted 2 cats, they were both stranded on the streets and I was not going to bring them to a shelter, so I took them in.  I love them both, they are my family (They are both much healthier compared to how they were when I first discovered them)  Anyway, come this November, the money I recieve will decrease to $1000, not enough to cover rent.  While endlessly searching for work, I have been trying to look for a cheaper bachelor, just in case I still can't land a job.  Look, I appreciate Canada trying to be open to foreigners, but this needs to stop.  Call me a horrible individual, but this is crazy.  I have applied to places that claim they require their employees to speak both English AND French.  I have gone to those very places (Tim Hortans, McDonalds etc...)  And whenever I order a coffee or something, the Non-Canadian employees can't understand English well and they can't speak French at all.  So why is it, that people like me, who can speak English and French- Are refused a hiring, and yet people who can hardly even speak English are hired?  Again, I appreciate that Canada has been attempting to be more culturally aware and diverse, but because of so many immigrants are moving to Canada, Canadians by birth are in a rapid decline.  Jobs being given out like candy to foreigners while looking for work as a Canadian is equivalent to swimming to the depths of the ocean while your oxygen tank is near empty.  Housing has become near impossible to obtain.

Until the food and housing crisis is fixed we should focus on out citizens and stop allowing more.  Canadas crime rate has sky rocketed and if you look at each individual city’s police new releases it is 92% of people not born here and most follow a very hateful religion that degrades women. Diversity only works in Westernized countries.  Do you think if we all decided to start immigrating to Muslim countries we could follow our western traditions especially women. Yes, some companies avec to hire a quota of visible minorities (which aren't minorities anymore in Ottawa but the laws did not change accordingly because there was too many migrants too quickly), which is leaving our youth jobless, while all we see in supermarkets or every other minimum wages are immigrants.  Not all canadians have diplomas, let alone the money to rent an appartment where they also prioritize minorities!

But also there's not enough doctors, not enough opportunities for young Canadians to fill the roles that Canada outsources, we don't have the housing, we are losing our identity, there's more crime, cities are overrun, I've noticed a freaky transition of how people behave while driving in the city. I get that Canadians want to be kind but at this point it's to our extreme detriment and I don't understand why politicians would do this to us. At this point if feels like they care more about people that aren't even born here. I can't even imagine how First Nations people must feel about it. Maybe we should fix the foundation before piling more on to it.

No, but I would make major changes.

First any adult that does not speak fluent English (French for Quebec) cannot enter. As in, not only the sponsor, but every adult in the family.

Second, there needs to be a well-stated expectation of assimilation.


Third, the amount needs to be drastically reduced. Immigration is a good thing in general, just not the way we have been doing it and the quantity we have been aiking for. A thousand new people a year? Sure no problem? Twenty thousand? Doesnt seem like an issue. Over a million a year? Now that's a problem.

I would, I am an immigrant myself and I have seen people including friends I held dear in my home country, come here and start abusing the system. Mostly because the cost of living is unbearable. 

I have debated returning home. my citizenship is almost done, maybe I will explore options that involve leaving the country after that. The biggest problem is, I am gay and most Asian and African countries don't have gay marriage and some are unsafe to even be homosexual. I feel spilt between the cost of living and having a good dating life or atleast acceptance for me as a person.

But from a canadian point of view. I would start closing the borders a bit and provide more subsidies to people here who want to start a family. Ivf or infertility treatments l, food stamps or "baby stamp" for baby essentials for people who qualify etc. Better bilingual education not just French or just English. And basically tackle the cost of living. 

These are my thoughts and I realize they are unpopular but had I know how expensive every little thing is here. It might have demotivated me from applying for immigration.Cost of living especially cost of renting has to come down. I am tired of paying someone else's mortgage.

Also a high intake of conservative immigrants makes it uncomfortable and unsafe for canada's LGBTQ+ population. It is crazy like even the gay immigrants hate trans people. like the spot where they are, is the cut off they will tolerate.

Pause immigration. Reorganize. Reprioritize. And do not tell me that we NEED immigration for entry level jobs. Reduce fast food and retail hours and we all know that the robots are coming for most service jobs. I do not wish for robots BUT we can use this tech to reduce the need to fill jobs rather than accepting 1200 immigrants daily

Beyond the facts that this extreme amount of immigration has caused a housing crisis, and an employment problem, there is the lack of assimilation into our culture. They come here to get away from the prosecution in their home land, only to bring their crap with them. They expect us to change our culture to fit their way of life, instead of trying to fit in. They come here and make it harder for actual Canadians to find a job. With most of the immigrants being "minorities," they are given jobs before Canadians. DEI at its finest. Being given affordable housing over needy Canadians. I say that as long as a single Canadian is unemployed we don't need immigration. As for population decline among Canadians, make it easier (and cheaper) to have more kids. The Canadian government seems obsessed with immigrants instead of its own citizens. Fix Canada before bringing in more people.

No! It is unethical to reject refugees. Students come here to study. Farmers hire migrant to do the harvesting that no one else wants to do. 
People always want to move to more prosperous regions. It would be far too expensive to shut down our borders to immigration.

I might be biased, as I'm a first generation immigrant. I'm canadian, I love it here, and I owe a large part of my success to Canada.

Let's take a few steps back. Let's look at Canada on the world map. I see a vast rugged landmass with very small pockets of population spread far away from each other. This population size is not enough to sustain basic things countries need - like protecting people inside &amp; outside, treating the sick &amp; elderly, financing &amp; maintaining vast networks of railways, internet cables, water, electricity, etc. 


Now let's look at Canada from an ethnocultural standpoint. I see some people with English ancestry, some people with French, some Native, some mishmash of people from all over the world. Really diverse, but not cohesive. 

The truth is, without more Canadians, Canada would cease to exist. Lower mainland will meld into the American north west, the golden horseshoe will become a borderless extension of the American east coast, stretching all the way south to DC via New York. This is not a good or a bad thing.

Now to answer your questions about wages - sure, in the short term canadian employers would be arm twisted into paying higher wages for all non-remote jobs. But those companies will either die or move away due to reduced profitability. A company like telus would be a lot less profitable than a company like t-mobile (without an influx of immigrants) simply because of the population base it serves. Canadians will move south in even larger numbers, further reducing the relevance of Canada as a nation distinct from the United States. 

Ironically, the immigrants who are accused of destroying the "culture" of Canada are the ones keeping it going.

Asylum will open up as an option if (read: when) the USA implements more drastic anti trans measures.

Losing our gender markers won’t do it. Post op trans women losing HRT or a huge breakout of violence and unjustified arrests of trans people probably will.

For now, there are many countries where you can live as a digital nomad if you can find work online or have decent savings.

If you own a home your rent might finance your entire lifestyle in Thailand. There are options out there.

Since the medias are so biased in the US and there’s a lot of misinformation, I’d like to inform those who don’t know that Canada has already started welcoming asylum seekers needing protection from the US. It’s important to know that any non US citizen can’t claim asylum from the border because of the STCA, since it says asylum seekers arriving to Canada from the US are expected to claim asylum at the first “safe” country they arrive in, but there are exceptions (being a US citizen needing protection from the US is one of them). Canadians are starting to petition to remove the STCA since Trump wants to deport 11 millions undocumented people. Last week, a family with a trans kid did claim asylum, fearing for their kid. I don’t think our legislation allows giving refugee status to US trans citizens (since the danger for trans people’s lives has increased a lot only very recently), but there are some activists groups starting to organize in order to change that. I guess if women’s lives and freedoms are eventually in danger, as they were in Gilead, Canada will also include them as eligible refugees. The good news is that our immigration system is currently running so slow due to the huge amount of people coming to Canada in recent years that by the time an asylum seeker case is being processed, Trump might not be in power anymore. So even in a case of a refusal, it gives people time to hide away. That said, any refusal to a refugee status gives a right to appeal. And if that appeal is also rejected, it’s possible to make another type of appeal for humanitarian reasons a year after that last rejection. This is really simplified, but just know it’s possible. That said, people who can’t afford a lawyer will be given free services from a state lawyer. This doesn’t mean that lawyer sides with the state, it only means it’s subsidized by citizen’s income taxes. The people I know had to spend around 5000$ CAD for the whole process, obviously more if there are appeals. Also, once you claim asylum in Canada, a work permit will be issued under your name. You can benefit from welfare (social security) allocations in order to survive until you get your work permit. You will also benefit from universal healthcare under the federal health program for asylum seekers. IMPORTANT : if you don’t speak French don’t come to province of Quebec, you’ll struggle getting a job and some provincial government services might be hard to get in English. Also, it might be easier to win the case in court if you go in less populated areas where they need workers. So Quebec, Ontario, Vancouver areas or any big cities might not be the best bets. I’m no specialist, but I thought I had to pass this info.
